A Sleeping Giant

Sister Julie B. Beck (BYU January 17, 2012
“Relief Societies are meant to be a safety and a refuge in these difficult days and to support and strengthen the identity, roles and responsibilities of HF’s daughters.

“What the Lord envisioned regarding RS has not yet been fully utilized. Many Relief Societies are at present much like sleeping giant waiting for you to breathe new life into them.

Inasmuch as the Lord chose to organize us in this way, it is important for us to seek for a greater understanding as to why we are thus organized and then to seek to fulfill the vision He has for us. Being part of the RS organization is a designation for a way of life.”

Are we a sleeping giant waiting for the breath of new life?
We taught, instructed, guided and reminded constantly

Do we understand Visiting Teaching? Is it a sleeping giant?

President Bednar (Increase in Learning)
“Understanding is the keystone that is erected upon the cornerstone of knowledge and precedes intelligence.”

Mosiah 12:27
Ye have not applied your heart to understanding; therefore, ye have not been wise”
Mosiah 2:9
Hearken unto me, and open your ears that ye may hear, and your hearts that ye may understand. And your minds that the mysteries of God may be unfolded to your view.

Open your ears, your hearts and your minds to VT

“the word understanding is described in the scriptures in relation to the heart”

Each of us as beloved daughters of God has a sacred responsibility that comes to us through our membership of this great RS organization.
It is time that we unleash the sleeping giant !!!!!!!!!

Comes from Prophet, Stake Presidency, Bishopric, Ward council and now to you.

The Bishop’s primary responsibility in our ward is the yourth!!!!!!!! It is not his responsibility to be concerned about individual needs of ward members.

This responsibility is going to be placed upon the shoulders of that person whos responsibility it has been. The watchcare of the sisters in our ward has always been will always be and is today the RS VT responsibility.

The purpose of RS is to help God’s children receive all they need to be able to return home to Him.
The motto of RS is Charity The pure love of God.

It is time for each one of us to wake up and fulfill our sacred responsibility for the watch care of that sister you are assigned to.

As the VT you care for and provide everything you can to assist, help teach that sister.
Compassionate Service leader – Sister Renee Anderson, Sister Toby Larson.
You come to me as President of the RS.

Lets not sleep any longer. Lets breath the life of charity into this Austin Ward RS.
We are a circle of sisterhood.
A circle of protection from the evils of the world
A circle of faith
A circle of trust
A circle of friendship
A circle of courage
A circle of comfort
A circle of nurturing
A circle of lifting
A circle of teaching
A circle of love
We are a sisterhood of Charity pure love of God as we share it with each other.

The Liahona

1 Nephi 16 continued

16:1 Thou hast declared unto us hard things, more than we are able to bear.
16:2 the guilty taketh the truth to be hard, for it cutteth them to the very center.
 Notes
o Wicked people do not want to know about truth
o Good people know both good and evil
o Evil people don’t know about either
o CS Lewis “When a man is getting better he realizes how bad he is.

16:10 “Lehi beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship”, the spindles would point the way they should travel.

Lehi found a Liahona outside his tent one-day
Left there by a loving father to lead and guide their way
I to have Liahonas and by my side they stay
If I listen and am faithful and willing to obey.

My Liahonas come from God, their light burst forth with flames
To warm the inter most part of my heart, to awaken my eternal soul.
They open my eyes to knowledge, words of prophets within my reach
As I read, study, ponder and pray the sacred message that they teach.

Loving parents were the first ones to take me by the hand
To lift and love and teach me of God’s eternal plan.
Latter-day prophets, leaders, and teachers lead by the Holy Ghost
Are always there to guide me when I need them the very most.

I am grateful for my Liahonas they surround me every day
Weaving in and out of my life in a most unexpected way
God places them where needed to guide me at each bend
So I will find my Savior, my Redeemer, my friend.
Dixie Sly

We all face trials probably everyday of our life. Some are small and some are so large we can’t handle them alone. What we do and how we react plays a big part in what we have to go through to gain or regain help from the Lord.
It was no different for Lehi and his family.

Have ye inquired of The Lord?

Day 7 / 1 Nephi 15-16

“If there is any one thing most needed in this time of tumult and frustration, when men and women and youth and young adults are desperately seeking for answers to the problems which afflict mankind, it is an ‘iron rod’ as a safe guide along the straight path on the way to eternal life.” (President Harold B. Lee)
? How can you ‘hold fast’ to the iron rod?

15:3 Father Lehi spoke many great things
 Hard to understand
 Must inquire of the Lord (if you don’t understand)
 Hardened hearts

15:8 Have ye inquired of the Lord?
15:11 If ye will not harden hearts and ask me in faith, believing that ye shall receive, with diligence in keeping my commandments, surely these things shall be made know unto you.
15:14 …they shall come to the knowledge of their Redeemer and the very points of his doctrine, that they may know how to come unto him and be saved.
15:15
 Rejoice and give praise unto their everlasting God
 Receive strength and nourishment from God
 Accept and come to the true fold of God
15:24 ‘Rod of Iron’ is the word of God
 Hearken unto the word of God
 Hold fast unto the word of God
o Never perish
o Temptations and fiery darts of the adversary will never overpower them unto blindness
o Never lead them to destruction

Go and Do

Day 3 /1 Nephi 3-5
“I have learned not to put question marks but to use exclamation points when calls are issued through inspired channels of priesthood government.” Elder Russell M. Nelson

1 Nephi 3:7
“….I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men save He shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.”

This is one scripture I memorized a long time ago, I don’t know why I was able to memorize this one and not all of the scripture mastery scriptures. The Lord must have known that I needed to remember and believe this scripture. I wouldn’t have moved to the mid west if I hadn’t listened to the Spirit and done what we were told. I would not have had the remarkable experience given to me if I had not listened and obeyed. I would not be who I am today without these experiences. My life has truly been blessed over and over again. I am not saying it has been easy! I had to leave my children and their families behind. I have not been able to be part of all the blessings, baptisms, scout advancements, birthdays, holidays, plays, and sport events. Let alone just not being able to watch them grow up and see the different stages of life. I have missed out on a lot! But, I have been blessed abundantly for my willingness to follow the Spirit. This life is such a short time of our existence and my hope is to be with my family throughout all eternity.

Goodly parents

Day 2 / 1 Nephi 1-2

“The Lord’s tender mercies are the very personal and individualized blessings, strength, protection, assurances, guidance, loving kindnesses, consolation, support, and spiritual gifts which we receive from and because of and through the Lord, Jesus Christ… The Lord’s tender mercies do not occur randomly or merely by coincidence. Faithfulness, obedience, and humility invite tender mercies into our lives, and it is often the Lord’s timing that enables us to recognize and treasure these important blessings.”
(Elder David A. Bednar)

The first verse in The Book of Mormon is such a powerful statement and so much can be learned from it.
“I Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the
Learning of my father…”
 Parents who “incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding” Proverbs 2:2
 They listened and knew the words of God…”their hearts were opened and they did understand in their hearts the words which were prayed” 3 Nephi 19:33
 Their knowledge was “of their Redeemer and the very points of his doctrine” 1 Nephi 15:14

I too have been born of goodly parents – they have taught me the way of the Lord – they have encouraged me and taught me through their righteous example to listen to and follow the Spirit. Their service to family, friends, and even just acquaintances never ceases. Their love for each other and family is eternal, unconditional love. Their greatest desire is to see and be with all of their family as an eternal family. Everything they do, everything they say, every action they perform expresses this great love that they have for the Lord, for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for their family. Because of their example, their teachings, their love I too want nothing more than to be encircled in the arms of my family for all eternity as a family unit.

1 Nephi 2:19
“…Blessed art thou, Nephi, because of thy faith, for thou hast sought me diligently, with lowliness of heart.”
 Seeking diligently is a continual process – having a prayer in my heart all day long. Being humble enough to knell morning and night when I address Father in humble prayer thru the Savior Jesus Christ. Knowing that I can’t do it alone. Willing to give back to Him the only thing I can and that is my agency, my free will, my worldly desires, in doing so I will become like Him, worthy of all that He gives to me.
